harley saddle bags Would it be better trying to make my sportster touring-capable, or go for another bike?
I am planning a trip in the summer to go about 14 hour round trip, approxamately. Corpus Christi, Tx to Dallas, Tx. I have my first bike which is a 883 iron sportster from Harley Davidson. The gas tank is so small though (3.3 gallons), and I've grown a bit taller since then and notice it is rather small. Would it be better to invest my money in adding on to make it a better touring bike (gas tank, saddle bags, windshield) or to just go for a bike like Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 classic LT or Yamaha V-Star 1300 Tourer? Or any other bike suggestions other than Harley due to very high price tags in my area. Thanks.
Think about ALL the motorcycling you do. Not just this one long trip, but how do you use your bike from day to day? Touring would be a lot more comfortable on a big cruiser, a Vulcan or Star (and let's not forget Honda Shadow). But if you only go on long trips once in a great while, the Sportster might be better for you all-around.
Nobody knows better than you how comfortable you are on the Sportster. Could you do 14 hours on it? Would it be fun or would it be horrible? Only you can answer that question.
The small gas tank is not really a disadvantage, because you want to stop every hour or so anyway to get off the bike and walk around for five minutes or so. My bike has a 7.5 gal. gas tank, and when I'm on a long trip with other bikers I'm always waiting for -them- to pull over to get gas. (I always joke that I fill up the bike once a month whether it needs it or not). Anyway I wouldn't consider the small tank a great hindrance.
In the old days there were not sportbike or touring bikes, just standards. If you wanted a touring bike you bought a standard and put a windshield and bags on it. A 'touring bike' was any bike you could bungee a sleeping bag to. 8^)
