Hello i want to do a trip across europe on a honda cbf 125 that i will adapt for touring (touring screen and luggage) and was wondering if anyone could give me advice or tips ps im live in the UK
People have done such trips on small engined bikes but you need to limit the amount of luggage that you carry and your daily mileages. If you base your day on 6 to 8 hours riding less short fuel food stops and calculate an average speed of 30 to 35 mph this will give you a daily mileage capability.These figures may seem low but i do a regular trip of 220 miles.My run time can vary from 3.5 hrs to 6 hours for the same route journey. Most of this is on UK motorways with a typical road speed of around 70mph. Take off this speed for traffic nd junctions etc, and my average speed varies between 35 to 45 MPH. So you cab see there is a considerable difference. On the other hand 1 run I did was from Rome to Paris over night stop, approximately 8 hours, Paris to North Yorkshire. I had left Rome at 10 am on the Monday and arrived in Yorkshire at 8pm on the Tuesday evening. The bike was a BMW GS. So you can see there can be considerable differences in time and distances achieved so set lower 'guesstimates'' and you should be OK. You also need some spare parts; bulbs, chain splir link if you use one, inner tubes, tyre levers puncture repair kit, small bottle of oil, (u may not be able to get your regular oil) first aid kit, mobile phone essential if your alone, maps or sat nav, always carry food in case you run late/get lost, good camping gear if you are camping, up to date water proof maps if no sat nav, ring home at a scheduled time + or - 1 hour so some one knows your OK, small digital camera that you can download to your phone or send back from places you stop at. Don't be too ambitious with your mileages, just go and enjoy. if you have am mini lap top computer you then have access to send e-mails back home, I did New Zealand a few years ago, used youth hostels in the main, 2 years bumming it, 30 000 miles absolutely brill. Give the bike a full service before you go and it should be good for a few miles, if you cannot service it on route at least change the engine oil occasionally. Any car or bike shop can do this stuff. So go and do the E U, take your time it's not a race, but most of all stay safe and enjoy. Good luck. You are if for one heck of a ride!
