Tourer bag

Experienced Bike Tourers Help?
Hey I'm planning to go coast to coast to coast across the U.S. (traveling there and back), and I need recommendations on these items:
-Tents
-Clothing (especially on jerseys that don't stink from sweat quickly)
-Camping gear (e.g. stoves, sleeping bag, etc.)
-What kind of foods to eat
-Lastly, what pedals/shoes to bring (i.e. topclip or clipless SPD system?).
I hope you have about 6 months to dedicate to your trek. Weather could be a major factor and you need to plan.
You may find that there are less camping facilities than hotel/motels in the US now days, and you may not camp as much as you originally plan. Other options are fire houses, churches and hostels.
Use Aluminum compressed gas Coleman cylinders for fuel, they are lighter than liquid fuels. Select foods that take the least time to cook -- time is fuel. You may find that you will be hitting restaurants for food too. A 160lb friend of mine just did one way last year and for breakfast alone he ate 3 instant oatmeal, 3 bananas, then found a restaurant and had coffee, juice, 2 eggs and pancakes -- and sometimes a second helping of pancakes. He ate as much as he could and still lost 15 lbs over 83 days riding. Always carry at least a 2 day supply of food. Hydration is a must and a camelbak and bottles on your bike are necessary.
Wear SPD cleats on comfortable shoes. Shimano 540 pedals.
Buy Schwalbe Marathon tires and carry 4 tubes and a pump. Have all emergency tools to keep your bike rolling until you find a bike shop. Cables and chains fail under the strain and you should have spares. You will use 4 to 6 tires going both ways -- not counting cut tires, although if you use the Marathons you lessen the chances of punctures.
You will find plenty of places to do laundry and at last resort of you have wicking quick drying jerseys -- you can wash them out in a sink and hang them to dry easily over night.
Aluminum cooking utensils and a burner for the gas mentioned above.
Look for a rip stop nylon tent with a rain fly. A backpacking down sleeping bag is light and warm.
Panniers front and back on racks. A handle bar bag for things you want quick access, like snacks, maps, cell phone, AM radio etc.
Good luck on your adventure.

Whatever happened to bungee hooks on naked/standard bikes?
One of the greatest things about the old Kawi ZX-11 was the flip out hooks near the passenger pillion. Now, all the mfrs. style up bikes that look like origami or transformers that don't have any provision of storage on any bike but a cruiser/tourer. How's a person to bring home a bag of groceries on a FZ-1? The only exceptions (I know) are the Bonneville and the 'Guzzi V7, which seems to already be discontinued in the US market. And both of those are wheezy nostalgia ticklers. I want a powerful, smooth (injected inline 4) bike. Not a race replica that I'll be eager to dismount and STAY off after only 30 min of riding. Not a cruiser trailing sparks around moderate turns with styling from 1948. Not a 700lb bagger. Just a nice POWERFUL standard, with some actual day-to-day utility.
I ride an 08 Triumph Bonneville, so they ain't been discontinued just gotta know where to look. Beside a center stand and kick start, the thing I really miss is the helmet hook that fit under the seat. Unlock the seat it had a hinge on one side hooks for two helmets set the seat down and it locked in place. That way you didn't have to tote your lids around, and was a bit more secure than hanging them off the handle bars or seat. Before I got saddle bags I tied a cooler to the seat used rope, tied it to the frame. Ever try getting a duffel bag in a Lamborghini?
